Brie’s Story: Discover the Transformative Power of Pilates for Mental Health

“I’M NOT AFRAID OF THAT RELATIONSHIP ANYMORE.”

“I’ve always had a difficult time with my body and with movement. I’m very restless. I can’t do exercise like running on a treadmill, where it’s the same thing over and over.

Pilates at Studio Evolve in Seattle really works for my ADD brain because there’s a lot of switching things up, but in a way that feels calm and not hectic. There’s also a grace to the movement, and a way it helps my mind rest, that has helped me in building a relationship with my body over time.

I’m not afraid of that relationship anymore.

This one healing journey of connecting with my body has led to many more healing journeys, all of which have improved my mental health.”

- Brie, Studio Evolve Pilates Studio Student

Brie first came to Studio Evolve, a Pilates studio in Seattle, in 2017.

She was looking for a movement practice that would feel more engaging than running on a treadmill or lifting weights at the gym, and found Pilates at Studio Evolve to be a much more enjoyable form of exercise than anything else she had tried.

Over the years, Brie says, she has learned to move her body in ways she wouldn’t have thought was possible. But the most profound impact her practice has had is in helping her build a relationship with her body.

“Of all the things I’ve had to relearn in my life, the mind-body relationship is one of them,” says Brie.  “We’ve kind of got it wrong. The idea that the body is a robot and your mind is pulling the levers is one of the backbones of western society, and actually, it’s not like that.”

“Through my Pilates practice in Seattle at Studio Evolve, I’ve discovered things about my somatic center, and the movement possibilities, and the relationship between my mind and body that I just didn’t realize before.”

Today, Brie works with Chelsea in private Pilates sessions and also in breathwork sessions.

She tried breathwork when she was going through a stressful period and wanted to find new tools to relax, and found that the breathing practices she learned from Chelsea could help alleviate her insomnia.

Brie’s current goal is to use breathwork to make meditation more accessible.

“I really dig the active breathing,” said Brie. “I want to start making time in the morning to practice. When I’m in the sessions, it feels like meditation could be within reach. I’m not the kind of person that’s the best at staying still, so meditation did not seem accessible. But this is a technique where you don’t have to stay still.”
